How is the NFL season structured?

The season starts with the preseason in August. While those games don’t count toward standings, they allow teams to test rosters, evaluate rookies, and prepare strategies for the real battles ahead. It sets the tone for everything that follows.

Once September arrives, the regular season begins. Each team plays 17 games across 18 weeks, and the grind is what separates contenders from pretenders. Fans ride every high and low because one win or loss can shift playoff hopes.

Then come the playoffs in January, which lead to the Super Bowl in February. The postseason is brutal because one bad game ends a team’s journey. We love how this structure builds suspense right until the very end.
